The coastal town of Dangriga is the heart of the Garifuna culture. Dangriga is a Garifuna word meaning ?sweet waters? referring to the North Stann Creek river which flows through the town. 80% of the population, around 7,000, are Garifuna.
Most of the year the town enjoys a laid back atmosphere, but on November 19, Garifuna Settlement Day, Dangriga becomes full of expatriate Garinagu returning to their roots to participate in the celebrations. The most famous of these is Pen Cayetano, artist and Punta Rock musician (see also 'Arts and Crafts' and 'Music').
