The Garifuna community on San Pedro was largely founded by Garinagu who came to Ambergris Caye seeking employment in the island?s tourism industry. The community is faced with significant problems of poverty, unemployment and lack of affordable housing.

Traditional Garifuna food can be purchased from vendors and small stalls in the town center.
