Libertad, near Corozal is the smallest Garifuna community in Belize occupied by only a handful of families. The town grew up around Belize?s first sugar mill which was established in the mid-1930s. Following the closing of the sugar mill in 1986, many Garinagu in Libertad have sought employment in Corozal, lately including Corozal Freezone.

The nearby Ranchito Lagoon, makes an interesting destination with its abundance of wildlife.
