Georgetown   PDF  Print  E-mail

Georgetown is a newer Garifuna community established in the 1960s by Garinagu from Seine Bight in search of farmland. Today approximately two hundred people live in the tranquil village which is located about half a mile off the southern highway. The road through town continues to the neighboring Maya Indian village, Maya Mopan. There are plans to connect the road with a road in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.

School recess in Georgetown

Many Garinagu in Georgetown are employed by nearby shrimp and banana farms. Others own small scale farms growing crops like citrus and cassava. The town has a primary school.

Currently there is no accommodation available for tourists in Georgetown.
